The workshop bond is in the German car insurance is an agreement between policyholder and insurer that the insured in case of damage committed a given workshop visit. These motor vehicle workshops are usually TÜV or DEKRA- tested workshops with which the insurance companies have concluded their own contractual relationships.

Sense of workshop loyalty

The workshop commitment is offered as part of comprehensive insurance and, in addition to a lower premium, usually also grants the policyholder a right to certain additional services. These additional services include, for example, discounted conditions for transporting the vehicle from the scene of the accident or providing a rental vehicle for the duration of the repair. These discounts are possible for the insurers because they have made agreements with their partner workshops on the amount of repair costs that are below the usual market prices. The resulting savings are passed on to insurance customers. Depending on the insurer, the discount can be 10–20 percent. However, the customer is obliged to have all comprehensive damage repaired in the partner workshop. If the contractually agreed workshop commitment is disregarded, the policyholder can face high contractual penalties.
