West Papua Liberation Organization

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The West Papua Liberation Organization (WPLO) is a liberation movement that works for the independence of West Papua from Indonesia . It propagates the republic of West Papua , which was proclaimed in 1971 but is not internationally recognized . The organization is based in Manokwari in West Papua. The WPLO represents the interests of Papuans on an international level.

history

The WPLO was founded at the University of Paradise Bird 's Boarding House Unit II A by students and on the initiative of John Anariam on July 22, 2002. Initially the organization was called the Youth and Students Association of Indigenous West Papuans (West Papua Indigenous Students and Youth, AWPISY). AWPISY was renamed WPIO (West Papua Indigenous Organization) in 2008 and later WPLO (West Papua Liberation Organization) in 2009. The WPLO is closely connected with local churches in West Papua and some pastors support the independence movement. Whereas in the past the indigenous Papuan ethnic groups were often forbidden from practicing traditional customs by missionaries , today the churches are increasingly preserving the traditional culture of Papua.

mission

The WPLO itself describes its mission as follows:

WPLO (WEST PAPUA LIBERATION ORGANIZATION) is one organization to promote west-papuas people rights to slev determination according to international covenant on civil & political right.
