The Westerplatte monument , in Polish Pomnik Obrońców Wybrzeża (Monument to the Defenders of the Coast), was unveiled on October 9, 1966 on the Westerplatte near Gdansk . It commemorates the defense of the Westerplatte by Polish soldiers at the beginning of the Second World War .

The 23 meter high monument was made from 236 granite blocks from a quarry in Strzegom, Lower Silesia, and has a total weight of 1150 tons. It stands on the bank of the harbor canal in the middle of an artificial hill.

The monument was designed by Franciszek Duszeńko, Adam Haupt and Henryk Kitowski.
