Anomaly (meteorology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In meteorology, an anomaly is the deviation of a meteorological variable such as the annual mean temperature or the amount of precipitation from its mean value. In most cases, this is a time average, but deviations from spatial averages are also referred to as anomalies. An anomaly can occur suddenly and last for several years.

For example, the 2003 heat wave can be called an anomaly.
