Avguštin Stegenšek

Avguštin Stegenšek (born July 7, 1875 in Tüffer , Lower Styria , today Slovenia ; † March 21, 1920 in Maribor ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and art historian .

Life

He attended high school in Celje and Maribor and then the seminary in Maribor. In 1898 he was ordained a priest. From 1899 to 1902 he went to the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome to study Christian art history . After his return he worked at the boys' seminary and the seminary in Maribor.

At the Faculty of Arts, University of Graz , he was in 1906 when Josef Strzygowski to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1908 he was appointed honorary conservator for four districts in Lower Styria by the Central Commission for Monument Preservation in Vienna .

Stegenšek is the pioneer in monument science in the Slovenian region. He founded the monumental work Cerkveni spomeniki lavantinske škofije ( The Church Monuments of the Lavantine Diocese ), which he illustrated with his own photographs and drawings and also published and edited it.
