The White Cube Gallery is one of the UK's best known commercial contemporary art galleries . The name refers to the general practice of presenting art in rooms painted white (see term white cube ). The gallery presented, among others, Gilbert & George , Anselm Kiefer , various Young British Artists such as Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin and many other internationally well received artists.

history

Founded in 1993 by British art dealer and gallery owner Jay Jopling as a contemporary art project on London's Duke Street, St. James's, the gallery quickly grew into an influential commercial gallery, despite being one of the smallest exhibition spaces in Europe. The central concern in setting up the program was the creation of an intimate space in which an artist could present a single work that was important to him in a concentrated manner.

In April 2000, the gallery moved to Hoxton Square in the East End, popular with artists and hipsters . In 2006 additional exhibition spaces were opened in Mason's Yard, also in the London borough of St. James's. The building, designed by MRJ Rundell & Associates, is the first freestanding building in the neighborhood in over 30 years. The White Cube Bermondsey followed in 2011 .

In March 2012 the White Cube Hong Kong opened the first branch outside of Great Britain, followed in December of the same year by White Cube São Paulo as the seventh branch of the gallery.

The gallery in Hoxton was closed in 2012, followed by White Cube São Paulo in 2015.

criticism

In 1999 the stucco artists' group declared the practice of presentation in white rooms to be sterile and old-fashioned; they set up exhibition rooms with colorful walls near the commercially oriented White Cube Hoxton gallery.

In 2015, White Cube Hoxton was attacked by opponents of gentrification ; Walls near the facility were sprayed with sayings such as " Yuppies out" and " Class War ".
