The Wilhelmsplatz (also Wilhelmplatz) is a central square in Hückeswagen .

It is located at the end of Islandstrasse between the confluence of Islandstrasse with Bahnhofstrasse and Goethestrasse. In the square there is a fountain that is popularly known as the " shashlik fountain ".

In 1897 the place was still a drinking pond for post horses . The Hückeswagen entrepreneur Jean Beché started a signature campaign around 1900 with the aim of beautifying the square. This was successful. The opening should take place on February 6, 1906. The occasion was the silver wedding anniversary of Kaiser Wilhelm II ; Ultimately, the square was opened on May 6, 1906. The landmark was a fountain with a little boy as a statue with a frog on his leg. In 1920 the figure's head was cut off.

In 1978-80 there was a major urban redevelopment. Goethestrasse was built, and a new fountain with a bronze sculpture by the Wülfrath stonemason and sculptor Kurt Fahrrad was built on March 21, 1980. In 2007, outdoor catering was approved for the first time on Wilhelmsplatz. The house of the Bergisch writer and poet Vinzenz von Zuccalmaglio , (1806–1876) is located on the square . From 1848 to 1856 he lived as a notary at Islandstrasse 52.

From spring 2011 the square will be upgraded with the construction of the new city street. The quality of stay is increased by calming the traffic on Bahnhofstrasse. Coordinates: 51 ° 8 ′ 59.9 ″  N , 7 ° 20 ′ 33.6 ″  E
