With top grades he received the certificate of maturity at the Karmelitergymnasium in Cologne in 1825 . After his military service with the 7th Artillery Brigade in Cologne, he studied from 1826 to 1831 together with his brother Anton Wilhelm in Heidelberg. Together they belonged to the Heidelberg fraternity . His brother turned to law and political science, he himself to simple law. He then moved to Paffrath , where he lived with his wife Gertrude, née de Caluwé, in Haus Blegge (called Blech). During this time he worked in Bensberg as a candidate for a notary in the law firm of Justice Councilor Peter Joseph Hilt (1806–1886). He stayed here until 1848. Then he became a notary in Hückeswagen and in 1856 in Grevenbroich . In Grevenbroich he was temporarily involved in the publication of the Grevenbroicher Zeitung (the "Grevenbroicher Kreisblatt"). Because his father, Jacob Salentin von Zuccalmaglio, founded the Musicalische Academie in Burscheid in 1812, he and his brother Wilhelm reported a lot about him and the academy and remained in contact with it throughout their lives. The city of Burscheid paid tribute to him with a bust in the street named after him in the city center.

Montanus wrote 75 books, brochures and plays.

  • The memorial erected in memory of Vincenz von Zuccalmaglio at the Montanus-Hof is called the Montanus monument in Grevenbroich . At the funeral of Zuccalmaglio in 1876, the poet Emil Rittershaus is said to have suggested the erection of a memorial for the controversial Grevenbroich notary Zuccalmaglio. The idea was quickly taken up and a memorial committee was soon founded and the first donations for the construction of the memorial were received. After five years, the monument to Vincenz von Zuccalmaglio was erected next to the Zuccalmaglio house, based on a design by the Düsseldorf architect Radke. The monument, an obelisk about three meters high with a bronze image of Zuccalmaglio, was badly damaged in World War II. The remains were stored in the municipal building yard, while the bronze picture came to the Grevenbroich-Stadtmitte cemetery. The memorial, popularly simply “Montanus Monument” based on the synonym used by Zuccalmaglio in his writings, was soon forgotten until, in 1979, parts of the obelisk appeared on the Orken garbage dump, where they were secured and again stored in the municipal building yard. The memorial was later re-erected in a simplified form at the old location next to the Montanus farm.
