The history association for Grevenbroich and surroundings e. V. is an association in Grevenbroich that is dedicated to researching and communicating regional history. It was founded in 1977 and has about 250 members.

founding

With the municipal reorganization, today's city of Grevenbroich was created in 1975, into which various formerly independent municipalities and cities had merged. Closely related to this is the founding of the Grevenbroich History Association.

On March 23, 1977, at the suggestion of the then head of the Grevenbroich Adult Education Center, Wilhelm Lauth, interested citizens met for a preparatory discussion. The aim was formulated: After the regional reform has been completed, the new city of Grevenbroich would like to try to secure the historical holdings in all city districts in order to arrive at a written account of the city's history. At the founding meeting on October 31, 1977, the 27 founding members elected Wilhelm Lauth as chairman, Friedrich Schmitz as managing director and Hans-Dieter Schnorrenberg as treasurer of the association.

activities

The history association regularly offers lectures and excursions on the history of Grevenbroich, the surrounding area and topics from the surrounding area. Members and interested parties meet about once a month for lecture evenings, and the semester program traditionally ends with an excursion into the surrounding area, such as to Münster , Liège or the German-Dutch border area. Since Friedrich Schmitz took over the management of the History Friends in 1996, historical bike tours, picture and film evenings have been added to the offer.

In 2000, the History Working Group was founded, which offers hands-on history four times a year and covers the archaeological topics of the city's history, such as the Roman and Franconian settlement of the region. In 2006, the family research working group was added, which deals with classic genealogy as well as biographical approaches to history. The association has set up its own extensive research library on Grevenbroich and Rhenish regional history, which is open to interested parties and can be used in the Grevenbroich city archive. A regional history section can be borrowed from the Grevenbroich city library.

Series of publications

The activities of the association are supplemented by its own series of publications, the contributions to the history of the city of Grevenbroich . Works, both collections of articles and monographs on the history of Grevenbroich, are published at irregular intervals. The first volume appeared in 1979, meanwhile (as of December 2015) a total of 24 volumes have been published in the series. In addition to a history of the Grevenbroich school system (Volume 4), essays on the Grevenbroich history were published.

Since 1996, the history association has started to present so-called district stories , which is how collections of articles on the history of Wevelinghovens (1996), published on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the place, as well as depictions of the history of Hemmerden (1999), von Kapellen (2001) and von Frimmersdorf were created (2001). In 1999 the work of the Kruchen Foundation in Wevelinghoven by Wolfgang Dietz was published in the series , and in 2006 the association presented for the first time an overall presentation of Grevenbroich's history under the title Grevenbroich. The history of the city . The author was Hans Georg Kirchhoff from Dortmund , who was supported by the archaeologist Jost Auler .
