Diedrich Uhlhorn junior (born December 20, 1843 in Grevenbroich ; † November 9, 1915 there ) was a German engineer and fruit grower .

Life

Diedrich Uhlhorn junior was a grandson of the inventor of the same name, Diedrich Uhlhorn , the Duke of Oldenburg Mechanicus. His father was the Kommerzienrat Johann Heinrich Uhlhorn (1805-1888). Since October 28, 1871 he was married to Hermine von Zuccalmaglio (1847-1930), the daughter of the Grevenbroich notary Vincenz von Zuccalmaglio .

Technical inventions

In the 1880s, under the impression of the consequences of the Franco-Prussian War , Uhlhorn tried to make technical innovations in agriculture that would help improve the nutrition of the people. He had particular success with a process he patented and published in 1885 for peeling rye , which made it possible to reduce the indigestible content of cellulose while maintaining the protein content and at the same time to increase the shelf life by reducing impurities and moisture.

Breeds

Goldrenette Freiherr von Berlepsch

In 1878 he bred the apple variety Zuccalmaglios Renette , named after his father-in-law , and in 1880 the Freiherr von Berlepsch , a variety that is still widespread in the Rhineland today . In 1906 the apple variety Ernst Bosch was added. In 1886 he also presented a cross between mirabelle plums and house plums , which should be cooked as prunes without added sugar. He achieved crosses between peach or apricot and cherry plum , which are said to have proven themselves as master builders for peach and apricot. He also bred the Grevenbroich cartilage cherry .

An apple tree adorns his tombstone in the Grevenbroich cemetery.
