William Bowyer († 1569/1570) was Keeper of the Records in England and Member of the House of Commons in England .

Bowyer was born into an influential family of traders from London and Chichester ; his father was the MP Robert Bowyer I. William graduated from law . In 1560 he became Bailiff of Westminster , in 1563 Keeper of the Records in the Tower of London .

In Bowyer's time as Keeper of the Records, the first systematic listing and order of the documents stored in the Tower took place. Over the course of eight years he produced a six-volume overview of all documents, books, letters and the like that have been in the Tower since the Middle Ages. This overview is no longer available today. Bowyer tried to move the documents that were kept in the Chancery to the Tower as well. Although his efforts were supported in principle, nothing happened.

William's son Robert Bowyer II was also a Member of the House of Commons, Clerk of the House of Lords , Door Keeper of the Exchequer and Keeper of the Council Chamber of the Star Chamber.
