Windmill (Ballantrae)

Ballantrae windmill

The Ballantrae windmill is located near the Scottish village of Ballantrae in the South Ayrshire council area . In 1994 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest monument category A.

history

The windmill was probably built in the late 17th century. An emergence in the early 18th century cannot be ruled out, but appears less likely. The building is shown on a map from 1775, but it seems to have been abandoned before. The windmill has been in a ruinous condition since the 1790s at the latest. In 2008 the structure was added to the Scottish register of endangered buildings. Its condition was last classified as a ruin in 2012, but with a moderate risk of deterioration.

description

The tower windmill is one of only twelve surviving mills of this type in Scotland. It is located on a gentle hill near the coast about one kilometer northeast of Ballantrae. All that remains of the windmill today is a tower stump that tapers slightly towards the top and is around seven meters high and around 4.5 m in diameter. The two opposite entrance openings in the quarry stone masonry are made with round arches . Furthermore, slot windows are embedded in the more than one meter thick masonry.
