Monkton Windmill

Monkton Windmill is located near the Scottish village of Monkton in the Council Area of South Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in monument category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2000.

The structure is isolated in an open field on the northeastern edge of Monkton. The Monkton tower windmill dates from the 17th century. The almost cylindrical tower has a diameter of five meters and a height of 6.9 m. The quarry stone masonry is about 90 cm thick. There are several small window openings and two entrances, one of which has been walled up. During the 18th century the mill was transformed into a pigeon tower . Nest boxes were installed inside. The final slate-covered conical roof is more recent.
