Windows Libraries for OS / 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Windows Libraries for OS / 2 (WLO, pronounced "Willow") was a collection of program libraries that could be used to port Windows applications to OS / 2 .

For this purpose, the WLO contained runtime libraries that represented the Windows API (16 bit) but translated their functions into OS / 2 calls (16 bit). This allowed programmers to its Windows programs instead of the usual Windows libraries with WLO to left to an OS to get / 2 program.

WLO was first published by Microsoft on February 4, 1991 (version 0.9) and was used in the OS / 2 versions of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel , among others . The program package Windows 3.0 Applets for OS / 2 contained the typical Windows applications for OS / 2: calculator, calendar, card index, clipboard, clock, editor, paintbrush, terminal, write, Windows help as well as the games Reversi and Solitaire - one not unwelcome addition to the sparsely featured early versions of OS / 2.

The WLO principle was later used by the developers of WINE to enable direct execution of Windows programs under Unix operating systems / X11 .
