The Windows Photo Viewer (formerly Windows Photo Gallery before Windows Picture and Fax Viewer ) is a program for easy digital display images. The program was first published together with Windows XP and has been an integral part of Windows ever since.
Functions and properties
The Windows Photo Viewer can display digital images in the most popular formats and can also print them out in various sizes if desired. It is also possible to rotate images, in which case the original file is overwritten by the lossy rotated version of the image without prompting. Unlike most Windows programs, Windows Photo Viewer is not executed from an Exe file, but from a Dll file. Under XP it is C: \ WINDOWS \ system32 \ shimgvw.dll. However, the program was executed from an exe file under Windows Vista .
history
The first version of the program appeared with the release of Windows XP in October 2001. In Windows XP, the program was still called Windows Image and Fax Viewer . This replaced the Imaging program , which was used in earlier versions of Windows. With the release of Windows Vista in January 2007, a completely revised version followed. Now the program was called Windows Photo Gallery . It was optically adapted to the Aero interface , which was also introduced with Windows Vista . In Windows 7 , the program was finally in Windows Photo Viewer renamed. However, this version also ignores the rotation flag , so that pictures taken in portrait format are not displayed correctly. The version from Windows 8.1 , which is identical to that from Windows 8, does not bring any visible innovations.
