We are the climate!

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We are the climate! How we can save our planet at breakfast (English original title: We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast ) is a bestseller by journalist Jonathan Safran Foer from 2019.

content

The author describes in the book that the climate crisis is ultimately too abstract to change human behavior. However, the book reminds us of the urgency of joint action. This is underlined by clear examples that are intended to encourage such action. The author criticizes factory farming , which has made a substantial contribution to global warming due to its high emissions of greenhouse gases . The book is a personal approach to the topic of the climate crisis and at the same time contains a realistic view of action. The author recommends a pragmatic approach, namely to consume animal products only once a day during the main meal.

Reviews

“'We are the climate!' is again an excellently researched non-fiction book with autobiographical allegories like his bestseller ' Eating Animals '. It's not as extremely loud as the lawsuit against industrial animal production, but maybe that's why it's incredibly close. The US writer has succeeded in providing nothing less than an unusual, rousing answer to the somewhat worn-out question: Why and how should I get involved in climate protection? "

- Thomas Kaspar, Frankfurter Rundschau, October 15, 2019

“That's why Foer worked for years on We are the climate, for years thought about how to tell what he wanted to tell. The task that the 42-year-old has set himself is to write a book that changes behavior. For this, says Foer, a narrative style is required, a narration that is able to show that humanity chooses mass suicide and why it would be so much nicer to avert approaching death and enjoy life. "

Reactions

The entrepreneur Dirk Roßmann , founder of the drugstore chain Rossmann, decided after reading the book to intensify his commitment to climate protection : "After reading this book, it was clear to me that I had to do something." In autumn 2019, Roßmann initially gave away 2000 copies of the book to all members of the Bundestag and board members of all DAX companies; 25,000 copies could also be requested free of charge via his company's website. Roßmann justified this with the urgency of the climate crisis : "We have a huge problem and we can't fix it with cosmetics, but only through action."
