The operating principle describes the way in which technical processes achieve their goal. This includes the combination of physical effects, geometric and material features ( impact factors ) and their interactions in the process .

In manufacturing processes , the tool and workpiece are referred to as an active pair , their movement to one another is the active movement .

Differentiation between the active and functional principle

An operating principle can be defined on the one hand for manufacturing or process engineering processes and on the other hand for processes inside a technical system such as a prime mover or work machine. It has become established to speak of an active principle for manufacturing and process engineering processes and a functional principle for system-internal processes .

history

In the 1950s, the first attempts were made to define the active principle as a property of technical processes. From the 1970s onwards, there was a broad discussion about the importance of the active principle. Through the general technology , approaches to a general technical theory that emerged with the new information technology towards the end of the 20th century, the description model of the operating principle was concretized in the 1980s.

According to Horst Wolffgramm , an active principle is described by the following scheme:

  1. Designation of the operating principle
  2. Description of the objective
  3. Description of the main characteristics of the subject of work
  4. Description of the essential functional characteristics of the working body
  5. Description of the operating conditions of the operating energy
