Wolfgang Hochstein

Wolfgang Hochstein (born April 11, 1950 in Salzkotten ) is a German musicologist , university professor and composer .

Hochstein studied school music, theory / composition, piano and organ in Detmold and musicology in Hamburg. In 1981 he was with a thesis on Niccolò Jommelli Dr. phil. PhD. Since 1976 he has been teaching at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater , where he received a professorship in 1982 and currently (as of 2011) heads the Institute for School Music there. He also works as a part-time church musician at St. Barbara Geesthacht.

One of Hochstein's main research areas is the composer Johann Adolf Hasse . He has been chairman of the Hasse-Gesellschaft Bergedorf since 1989, as well as the editor of the Hasse-Werkausgabe and co-editor of the Hasse-Studien. Hochstein received several awards for services to Hasse research, including the first volume of the "Hasse Werkausgabe" published by him in 2000 the German Music Edition Award in the category "Scientific sheet music / complete editions".

In addition, Hochstein presented other publications on church music topics and composers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Some compositions were also published by Hochstein. Currently (as of 2012) a four-volume "History of Church Music" is being published by Laaber-Verlag, which he is co-editor of.
