Happy Thursday (Original Title: Sweet Thursday ) is a 1954 novel by the American writer John Steinbeck .

The book follows on from the better-known novel The Sardine Street and continues the stories of Doc and the residents of Cannery Row in Monterey into the period immediately after World War II . Less episodic than Sardine Street , it essentially tells the romance between Doc and the prostitute Suzy, a new resident of the street. As in the previous novel, the character Doc and the plot are loosely based on the life of the marine biologist Ed Ricketts , a close friend of Steinbeck.

The novel was adapted by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1955 under the title Pipe Dreams for the stage as a musical . The plot of both novels was also filmed in 1985 by David S. Ward as Sardine Street .
