Woori Financial Group is a South Korean corporation headquartered in Seoul .

The group came into being as a result of the Asian crisis on the East Asian financial markets. Woori Financial Group was founded in 2001 and is the second largest financial group in South Korea. The group comprises the former South Korean financial companies Hanvit , Peace , Kwanju and Kyonnam Banks as well as Hanaro Investment Banking . These predecessor companies were taken over by the South Korean government and recapitalized as these financial companies had fallen under the Basel I guidelines . The South Korean government is the main shareholder in Woori Financial Group . Woori Financial Group is one of the top ten of the KOSPI share index .
