The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), German: World Association of Nuclear Operators , is an interest group of the nuclear industry.

It is based in London and has four regional centers in Atlanta , Paris , Moscow and Tokyo . All countries and organizations in the world that operate a facility for generating electricity from nuclear energy are members of WANO. WANO was founded in 1989, three years after the Chernobyl disaster .

WANO has set itself the task of promoting international cooperation and professionalism in the nuclear industry through mutual support, information exchange and the application of best practice procedures, in particular to make nuclear power plants safer and more reliable and to check, evaluate and improve their performance.

Chief Executor Officer since 2013 is Ken Ellis, who held several senior positions at Bruce Power . Jacques Régaldo, previously employed by Électricité de France , has been Chairman since 2013. Bruce Power's CEO Duncan Hawthorne is President of WANO.

history

The founding meeting took place in Moscow in May 1989. The first larger meeting ("Biennale") took place in Atlanta in 1991 with around 250 participants; In 1993 they met in Tokyo, 1995 in Paris, 1997 in Prague, 1999 in Canada ("A new Memorandum of Understanding is signed between WANO and the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding cooperation and exchange of information between the two organizations."), October 2003 in Berlin, 2005 in Budapest, 2007 in Chicago, February 2010 in New Delhi.
