World Human Powered Vehicle Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Human Powered Vehicle Association (WHPVA) was founded in 1976 in the USA under the name International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) . It was initially an amalgamation of national associations for vehicles powered solely by muscle power and other international members.

In 1998 the US association HPVA split off from the IHPVA and resigned from it in 2004. In the context of a dispute over the name, the HPVA succeeded in taking possession of the domain ihpva.org and it has now been using the name International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) since 2008 , while the original bearer of the name had to find a new name and since then called the World Human Powered Vehicle Association (WHPVA) .

The WHPVA / IHPVA published a printed scientific journal Human Power , later an online journal Human Power eJournal . The tasks of both the IHPVA and the WHPVA are to control, review and recognize records, establish competition rules, coordinate the dates of championships and exchange information. Today's IHPVA does this primarily on the American continent; WHPVA is more on the European continent, including Australia and Asia where possible.

Between the American HPVA / IHPVA and the international IHPVA / WHPVA there have been conflicts over racing categories, records and copyright issues over and over again for ten years.
