World Science Fiction Society

The World Science Fiction Society (WSFS) is a literary organization whose tasks are the dissemination of science fiction literature, the presentation of the Hugo Award , the selection of the location of the annual Worldcon , the choice of the committee responsible for organizing the Worldcon and the event the North American Science Fiction Conventions (NASFiCs) is.

The Society also bestows the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in Science Fiction and, from 1974 to 1980, the Gandalf Grand Master Award for outstanding achievements in fantasy literature.

Hugo Award

The Hugo Award has been given since 1953 and named after Hugo Gernsback , a pioneer of science fiction.

It is considered one of the most important prizes in SF literature and is awarded annually by the participants of the SF Worldcons, usually for works that were published in the past year. Although the focus is on SF literature, the Hugo Award is also given for works from the field of fantasy literature .

Worldcon

The Worldcon (World Science Fiction Convention) is an annual meeting of the WSFS. The first world convention took place from July 2-4, 1939 on the occasion of the world exhibition in New York . Two more world conventions took place in the following two years, but the meeting was interrupted during World War II and not held again until 1946.

The coveted Hugo Award will be presented at the Worldcon . In addition to the Hugo, other awards will also be presented at Worldcon: the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the best new author and the Gandalf Award .
