World Team Cup (wheelchair tennis)
The World Team Cup in wheelchair tennis has been held annually by the ITF since 1985 . This is a team competition, which in wheelchair tennis has a comparable status to the Davis Cup for men and the Fed Cup for women without disabilities.
history
The World Team Cup first took place in the United States in 1985. A total of six men's paraplegic class teams competed, including Australia, Canada, France, Israel and Japan in addition to the hosts. The event stayed in the United States up to and including 1991, and the field of participants grew continuously. 14 teams entered Belgium for the first time outside the United States in 1992. Among the women, who have also competed since 1986, the number of participants increased from initially two - the United States and the Netherlands - to nine teams. This development continued steadily. In 1997 the men's field consisted of 32 teams for the first time, the women achieved the highest number of participants to date with 16 teams for the first time in 1999. In 1998 another competition for quadriplegic players was introduced. This started with four teams and reached its highest value in 2001 with eight participating nations.
