Wubi input scheme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wubi is an abbreviation for “Wubizixing” ( 五筆 字型 輸入 法  /  五笔 字型 , wǔbǐ zìxíng shūrùfǎ  - “Five-stroke character model input method”, since any character can be entered with a maximum of five keystrokes) and is one of many Input methods for simplified Chinese characters .

The advantage of this input scheme is that it is solely dependent on the image of the character, so it does not require any knowledge of pronunciation, and is therefore very interesting for students of Chinese writing. The high writing speed should also be mentioned.

The disadvantage of this input method is that you have to know how Chinese characters are generally structured (arrangement, radicals ) and in which stroke order they are written.

Input layout of the keyboard

The 26 letters of the alphabet without the umlauts “ä”, “ö” and “ü” are used to enter the character image; the "z" has a special role. No distinction is made between upper and lower case. The keyboard is divided into groups of visually related characters as follows:

^ 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 0 ß ' <-
tab q w e r t z u i O p ü
lock a s d f G H j k l ö Ä '
shift < y x c v b n m , . _ shift

Note: The “y” seems out of place, as do the “z” and the “m”; the first two are swapped on an English keyboard so the mappings make sense. That's why the “y” in the following also belongs in region 4. With the “m” there was simply not enough space on the right, because not every keyboard has “ö” s.
