Wulfnoth Cild
Wulfnoth Cild (around 1000 ) was possibly the father of Godwin von Wessex , whose father was definitely called Wulfnoth. Since Wulfnoth was not a common name, it can be assumed that it is the same person. This made him the grandfather of King Harold Godwinson .
He was a nobleman in Sussex whose possessions - as reported in a will by King Aethelstan - were at Compton. Allegedly he was even descended from King Ethelred of Wessex , the older brother of King Alfred the Great . The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports an incident when Wulfnoth, under the rule of Aethelred the Unfinished, devastated the south coast with 20 ships from the royal fleet and destroyed the 80-ship fleet of Beorhtric (Brihtric), brother of Eadric Streona , which was stranded in the storm . Wulfnoth was then banished, while his son Godwin was allowed to stay in England.
