The X.Org Foundation is a foundation that defines the standards for the X Window System and administers and develops its own X Window System, the X.Org Server , as a reference system.

Projects

The main project is the operation of the X.Org server , there are also other X servers as well as:

  • AIGLX from version 7.1
  • Xgl , an implementation of an X server as a GL client, which offers effects and possibilities similar to AIGLX. The technical approach, however, is fundamentally different; In addition, Xgl is currently (as of October 2006) not part of the X.Org server.
  • Xegl , an X server that has the same graphical capabilities as Xgl. However, it should be implemented directly in OpenGL on a new driver architecture that is independent of the windowing system.
  • Debrix , the direction of development that is to change the modularization and structuring of the X server comprehensively.
  • KDrives , a highly modular X-Server that served as the basis for Debrix and currently only exists to try out. It's called KDrives because it works exclusively with the help of the kernel.
  • Xinerama supports the connection of multiple physical displays to a virtual desktop.
  • X Test Suite , an environment that simplifies the testing of X skills and X software.

history

The former X.Org organization was responsible for the X standards, but there was no real implementation of a server there. The best known and most widely used X server came from the XFree86 project.

After disputes about a new license for the upcoming release of version XFree86-4.4 broke out around 2003 within the XFree86 project, many developers left the project to further develop the server based on the old license. Since the new license was also rejected by many Linux distributions as being incompatible with the GPL , the developers, together with employees from various distributions and the old X.Org organization, formed the new X.Org foundation to support the X-Server and also to further develop and manage the X standards.

The work was closely linked to that of the freedesktop.org project, which also offers the source texts on its servers and coordinates parts of the development.

In contrast to the old X.Org organization, the foundation is mainly run by developers.
