Xerente
The Xerente (also called Sherenté or Cherente ), their own name Akwê , are an indigenous people who settle in the Brazilian rainforest in the state of Tocantins between the Rio do Sono and Rio Tocantins . The Xerente were 1552 people (as of 2002) who live in 30 villages. Their reserve covers an area of 183,542 hectares. According to Siasi / Sesai, the number of tribesmen was given as 3509 people in 2014.
The language of Xerente heard along with the Xavante and the Xakriabá the Acua -Sprachgruppe on from the Gê - language family .
The people originally belonged to the Timbira tribe, who used to live in the area of what is now the state of Maranhão . The sub-groups Xerente, Xavante, Krahô and Apinajé were torn apart by constant fighting . The new groups withdrew to more inaccessible areas and defended them against all white intruders for decades.
