XpanD 3D
XpanD 3D is the brand name for a digital 3D display process for digital cinema , home cinema , video games and other applications. XpanD is the world market leader for shutter glasses .
technology
Stereoscopy is based on the principle that each eye is shown a slightly different image. Xpand uses a shutter system for this , in which the images for each eye are shown in rapid succession. The viewers wear electronic glasses, the LCD lenses of which alternate between transparent and opaque so that the wearer only sees the right image for the right eye at the right time. An infrared signal that is sent into the auditorium ensures that the glasses are synchronized. The new "X103 Infinity" glasses have been available since 2012: They are a little lighter, have a slightly larger field of vision and have a different geometry. According to the manufacturer, the easily replaceable standard battery should last at least 350 hours.
advantages
In contrast to systems with polarized light (such as RealD ), XpanD does not require a silver screen . In addition, in contrast to other methods, there is no loss of quality in the color quality of the image compared to two-dimensional projection. If the viewer tilts his head, there are no disadvantages for the 3D effect that exist with linear polarization.
disadvantage
XpanD glasses are significantly more expensive than polarizing filter glasses . That is why these are usually loaned out by the cinemas, cleaned after use and used several times. The cinemas have to factor in a certain loss due to theft or damage in the operating costs. The glasses are also a little heavier than other systems. In addition, every LCD glass is arithmetically switched to dark for half of the film and darkens the image slightly even when looking through it, which means that the visible image is noticeably darker and less contrasting. The glasses contain batteries for the integrated electronics, the blinking of the fields of vision signals that the battery needs to be replaced.
