ZTreeWin 2.1

XTree is a "tree" -oriented file manager for DOS . The first version was presented to the public on April 1st, 1985 at the San Francisco "West Coast Computer Faire" (programmed since 1983). In November 1985 the computer newspaper PC Magazin presented the “Editors Choice Award” to Xtree. In 1987 the version XtreePro and 1990 XtreeProGold were published. Both are further developments.

In 1993 Central Point bought Executive Systems Inc. (ESI) and with it the XTree software. The program should become part of the PC tools for Windows 3.0. When the company was sold to Symantec , only a single version was released. Version 4.0 for Windows could be operated in normal file manager and XTree mode.

Individual features, such as the recognition of the file format in the viewer even if the wrong file extension is used and the optional treatment of archives as a directory, can still only be found sporadically in file managers today.

PC-Tools for Windows 3.0 File Manager / XTree for Windows 4.0 has its own SFX data compression format . There are the subsequent developments XFile and ZTreeWin , which are sold as shareware, as well as the freeware eXtreme . Under Linux there is an XTree implementation called Ytree .
