Yahya ibn Mahmud al-Wasiti ( Arabic يحيى بن محمود الواسطي, DMG Yaḥyā b. Maḥmūd al-Wāsiṭī ) was a miniature painter and calligrapher of the 13th century. He was born in Wasit in the south of what is now Iraq and worked in Baghdad . He is known for his 96 color illustrations of the Maqāmāt of al-Hariri , which he made in 1236/37. He is considered to be one of the most important representatives of the so-called Baghdad School (12th / 13th century), which combined Turkish art with local Christian painting in an Islamic syncretism .
