The Yancheng Nature Reserve is located near the city of Yancheng in the west of the Chinese province of Jiangsu .

The protected area extends over 2,800 square kilometers of coastal zone, 174 of which belong to the core zone. It was established primarily to protect the endangered Red Crane , and more than half of the total population of these birds overwinter here. From a climatic point of view, the reserve lies in the transition area between the moderate latitudes and the subtropics. About 90,000 people live in the reserve.

Other typical species of Chinese marshland, such as the water deer , also belong to the fauna of the area. Since 1986, David deer have also been resettled in a fenced-in zone of the protected area, the Dafeng Milu nature reserve.
