The Yau Ma Tei Pumping Station (舊 水務署 抽水 站), also known as Former Pumping Station, Water Supplies Department (WSD) (前 水務署 抽水 站 工程師 辦公室), called The Red Brick Building ( RBB ) in Hong Kong (紅磚 屋), is a former pumping station in the Yau Ma Tei district , Kowloon , Hong Kong . The only remaining building at 344 Shanghai Street is the Engineer's Office of the Former Pumping Station , Water Supplies Department (engineering office of the former WSD pumping station, 前 水務署 抽水 站 工程師 辦公室). It is owned by the state.

History and description

The pumping station was put into operation in 1895 and supplied the local population with fresh water from several wells. The original complex of the pumping station consisted of three one-story buildings and a high chimney of the heating system. Operations were stopped in 1911 and the chimney was the first to be removed in 1912.

The utilitarian design of the building corresponds to the designs of industrial buildings at the time. Typical are the red brick walls with almost no decoration (which were responsible for the name The Red Brick Building ), the timber roof and the floor structure. The importance of the building is that it documents Hong Kong's industrial development in the late Victorian era. The use of the building later changed frequently: it was later used as a post office, a depot for dangerous goods and other purposes.

The Yau Ma Tei Pumping Station pumping station has been listed in the list of historical buildings as Category I by the state-run Antiquities and Monuments Office since December 2009 .
