Yau Ma Tei Theater (Chinese 油 麻 地 戲院), also YMTT , rarely Yaumati Theater , once the largest cinema in Kowloon, Hong Kong, is located in the Yau Ma Tei district ( Kowloon , Hong Kong ) at the intersection of Waterloo Road and Reclamation Street. Another historic property, Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market , is just a few meters down Reclamation Street.

History and architecture

According to the sources, the building was constructed between 1925 and the late 1920s. It is the last of many Hong Kong cinemas to be built in the 1920s and 1930s. The city administration decided in 2007/2008 that the Yau Ma Tei Theater will be converted into a stage for the Canton Opera . The original 500 visitor seats have been reduced to 300.

Like all cinemas in Hong Kong built after the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (1925) in Paris , the Yau Ma Tei Theater shows the decorative elements of Neoclassicism and Art Deco. The Yau Ma Tei Theater has been listed in the list of historical buildings as Category II by the state-run Antiquities and Monuments Office since December 2009 .
