The Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) is a questionnaire for external assessment of the severity of manic symptoms. The questionnaire was developed by Young and colleagues in 1978. It comprises 11 questions to be answered by an examiner experienced in assessing mental disorders . Values between 0 and 4 points can be given for each question. Four of the eleven questions are scored twice, so that a maximum of 60 points can be awarded in total. Point values of 20 or more are taken as an indication of manic symptoms. The questionnaire is considered to be the gold standard for recording manic symptoms and is used to assess the effectiveness of antimanic drugs.
