Yuru Chara

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yuru Chara ( Japanese ゆ る キ ャ ラ , Yuru Kyara , English “light character”) are Japanese mascots. The term was coined by the Japanese cartoonist Jun Miura for the advertising mascots that have been booming in Japan since 2007 and advertise public events, regional events or specialties. The city of Kobe alone is said to have 42 mascots.

The mascots are becoming increasingly popular in Japan. Not only do annual Yuru-Chara festivals take place, but since 2010 the best mascot has been awarded in the so-called Yuru-Chara Grand Prix. In 2012, 865 mascots were nominated for this Grand Prix, twice as many as in 2011, with Kumamon emerging as the winner in 2011 .
