The Principe – Granarolo rack railway is a form of public transport in Genoa , Italy and runs every 20 to 30 minutes during the day. The line opened in 1901 with a track width of 1200 millimeters is a total of 1.13 kilometers long and manages a height difference of 194 meters. The railcar runs at a speed of 8 km / h. A special feature for a rack railway is the Abt turnout, with which the train crossings functioned without having to switch points. For this, the railcars had to be equipped with asymmetrical wheel sets and the upper edge of the rack was level with the upper edge of the rails. The car bodies have been adapted to the mean gradient, also comparable to funicular cars
For years the cog railway was only used by passengers in the lower part to the Via Bari stop just before the siding, roughly in the middle of the route (approx. 500 meters). The operation of the upper part of the line was not possible because of the necessary repair work on the retaining walls and the superstructure . The only existing railcar runs with a pantograph placed above the entrance area on the mountain side . The pantograph on the end of the valley is no longer used. In Granarolo there is a roofed building where the vehicle is parked and serviced. The siding in the middle of the route is out of order, and according to the railway staff, the second vehicle is being processed for a museum.
Passenger operations have been back on the entire route since November 13, 2012 after the retaining wall was stabilized in the upper part. The previous Riggenbach ladder racks have been replaced by flat steel racks from Roll .
