Zampelbüdel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zampelbüdel is the Low German name for the linen breakfast bag worn over the shoulder by the former Hamburg port workers . The term is made up of the English sample ("sample") and the Low German Büdel for "bag".

The name originated in connection with the customs regulations of the free port . On the way home, the dockworkers liked to take high-quality customs goods from the port in their breakfast bags, for example tobacco, coffee and rum, which were tolerated in small samples - regardless of the fact that the so-called sample was sometimes quite extensive and was confiscated.
