Magic board: Variant Etch A Sketch

A magic board is a drawing board on which you can write with a special pen using mechanical pressure or magnetism without using any writing material and erase what you have written. The magic tablet was invented by André Cassagnes , who died on January 16, 2013 at the age of 86.

There are different types of such "magic tablets".

  • One variant ( Etch A Sketch ) has a silvery-light powder on the inside that sticks to the inside of the transparent plate. A built-in metal pin, invisible from the outside, is moved in the X and Y directions with two small wheels. This draws a line in the dust.

  • The functional principle of the second variant (" Magna Doodle ") are special honeycombs in which there is a white, opaque liquid and fine magnetic iron filings. You draw with a pen with a magnetic tip (or you can “draw” with magnetic stamps). Due to the magnetic attraction, the chips are drawn up in the honeycomb, which makes the honeycomb dark and it stays that way. A long, thin magnet is moved under the honeycomb with the lever, this pulls the chips back down and the honeycomb becomes light again. This board was invented in 1974.
  • The third variant works very simply, it has been around since the 1960s. These boards are thin and consist of a simple plate with a thin film on top. They work in such a way that the foil is pressed against the plate with the help of the pen, adheres there and thus appears darker. These boards can be erased by separating the film from the surface again.
  • Even in the 1960s, there were already magic tablets in the free trade, consisting of a solid black paste enclosed between two transparent foils, which completely covers a stiff, flat, brightly colored background plate. By mechanical pressure with a - as smooth and rounded as possible! - The paste can be moved and displaced locally with the brush or your fingers, whereby the brightly colored background becomes visible in these areas. The entire paste can also be pushed together in the middle of the magic board and processed as a closed, dark silhouette against the colorful background. To erase the paste is spread evenly thick with a squeegee so that it again covers the background with an opaque layer.
