It was established in April 1786 at the Academy of Arts and Mechanical Sciences on the initiative of the Secretary of State and War Minister Friedrich Anton Freiherr von Heinitz, who was appointed director in January of that year .

The drawing school for craftsmen was a part-time school at which apprentices and journeymen from various trades were taught from April to September from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., the lessons were free of charge.
