The Zeniarai-Benzaiten-Ugafuku-Shrine ( Japanese 銭 洗 弁 財 天宇 賀 福 神社 Zeniarai-Benzaiten-Ugafuku-jinja ) is a shrine dedicated to the Benzaiten at a mountain spring on the northern edge of the city of Kamakura . As the name affix implies, even small coins ( , Zeni ) that are washed there ( 洗 い , arai ) should multiply.

history

Originally this consecrated site belonged to the Yasaka shrine in the Ōgi valley ( 扇 ヶ 谷 Ōgi-ga-yatsu ), but it went into business for itself in 1970 and has been called since the Zeniarai-Benzaiten-Ugafuku shrine ( 銭 洗 弁 財 天宇 賀 福 神社 ). The genesis of the shrine says that Minamoto no Yoritomo in the year of the serpent 1185 in the month of the serpent and on the day of the serpent, namely on Migetsu Mi-no-Hi ( 巳 月 巳 の 日 ), an old man, in reality the benevolent God saw Ugafuku who said the following. “In the northwest on the outskirts of the city you will find a spring in the mountains that rises from the rock. Go there and worship the gods there. And if you wash a coin in the spring there, it will multiply many times over. ”Ugafuku is said to have a snake's body with a human head.

To this day, the spring is visited by many people who try to increase their luck by laundering money.
