International Journal of Medical Microbiology (abbreviated Int J Med Microbiol or IJMM ) is a journal of microbiology that has been published since 1887. It was founded by Friedrich Loeffler under the name Centralblatt für Bacteriologie und Parasitenkunde . After 16 volumes under the original title, two different series, called departments, appeared from 1895.

From then on, Department 1 concentrated on medical-hygienic bacteriology and animal parasite science and took over the original tape count and continued it. After 14 volumes (17 to 30), the first department is divided into 2 editions: a) 1st department - originals with original papers and b) 1st department - papers with reviews. Both subdivisions appeared in parallel and with different frequencies from volume 31.1901, so that by 1945 the originals subdivision had volume 151, while the presentations subdivision ended with volume 145.1945.

From 1895 a separate 2nd section appeared, which focused on general, agricultural, technical food bacteriology and mycology, protozoology, plant diseases and plant protection as well as animal diseases . In contrast to the 1st department, which took over and continued the original volume count, the 2nd department started again with volume 1.1895 and published a total of 106 volumes by the time it was discontinued in 1944.

After the Second World War, both departments continued their separate publication in a total of 3 editions from 1947 (department 1) and 1952 (department 2). The departments continued to be edited and edited by Fischer-Verlag, but in the main headquarters of the publishing family that had emigrated to Stuttgart, not in the GDR stamp that remained in Jena and continued until 1990. The main title has been expanded to include Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Parasitenkunde, Infectious Diseases and Hygiene .

In 1980 the title changed to Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie und Hygiene and subsequently appeared under the English (sub) title international journal of microbiology and hygiene . In addition, the sub-series Department 1 appeared, originals in two sub-editions A and B. The series were published until 1999 in the Fischer, later reunified Urban & Fischer publishing house until 1999.

From 2000 the Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie appears under the English title International journal of medical microbiology: IJMM in Elsevier-Verlag.

The current editor-in-chief of the paper is Sebastian Suerbaum . In 2016 the magazine had an impact factor of 3.391.
