Brickworks (2016)

The Ziegelhütte is an artist house and exhibition building in Darmstadt .

history

The brickworks on Kranichsteiner Straße is one of six buildings of this type that existed in the city until 1819. In 1972, operations there ceased. Up to 15 employees were employed in the brickworks during active times. In addition, it was the home and office of the respective operator of the brickworks. The brickworks and house were built around 300 years ago. In the city chronicle it says: "The new construction of the city brickworks, which had been declined due to wars, caused greater costs of a total of 188 guilders in 1651". The house, which has been changed and expanded several times over the years, is located directly on the busy Kranichsteiner Straße. Its solid baroque shape was retained, while the structure of the building deteriorated more and more. Most recently, the house was in such a desolate condition that it was threatened with demolition. The then president of the Darmstadt Secession, Pit Ludwig , who had converted the former barn on the site into his home, campaigned for the preservation of the brickworks. In 1983 the property was leased to a non-profit association founded for this purpose. The city of Darmstadt supported the renovation, as did Darmstadt companies and a group of friends.
