Ornamental cabbage ( Brassica oleracea var. Acephala ) is among the cabbage plants ( Brassica oleracea ssp.) And is characterized by curly multicolored leaves. There are differences both in size and in leaf color and shape. The leaves grow on short stems and are green to almost purple, but sometimes almost white. It is closely related to kale , related, which is also known in Switzerland kale. Most of the varieties were bred in Japan .
The plant is mainly used as winter decoration for beds , window boxes and vessels. Ornamental cabbage can withstand temperatures down to −8 ° C. Newer varieties also tolerate lower temperatures, e.g. B. the purple-red 'Redbor' F1.
Due to its color, ornamental cabbage is also particularly suitable for garnishing serving platters.
Ornamental cabbage has high levels of vitamins A and C, also contains potassium, phosphorus, calcium and iron and can also be used as a vegetable - prepared like savoy cabbage .
