Zimu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zimu is the supreme deity in the traditional religion of the South African Ndebele .

In the mythology of the Ndebele, Zimu sent people a chameleon and a lizard to tell of life and death. While the chameleon was supposed to convey the message that humans would rise again after death, the lizard was supposed to tell that death was the actual end of humans. But since the chameleon was slower than the lizard, the news of ultimate death reached people first. When the chameleon finally reached the people, they had already accepted the lizard's message.
