Circus Sardam (Circus Šardam) is a play by the Russian author Daniil Charms .

The play consists of two acts . The piece was conceived for a puppet theater. The play appeared for the first time in 1992 in the Russian magazine Sovremenaja dramaturgija (contemporary drama).

action

I. act

The play takes place in a puppet circus. A director appears and wants to begin the performance. He is disturbed by Vertunov, who makes annoying comments for the director. The director confronts Vertunov. It then turns out that Vertnuov wants to work for the puppet circus. Vertunov offers the director various things that he (supposedly) can, including flying, barking, standing on one leg, grunting and neighing. But Vertunov does not succeed in everything, so the director sends him out of the ring. Then the performance begins.

1

The rider Robert Roberovic Lepjochin appears, then a clown. When they have finished their demonstration, Vertunov appears again and wants to show how a fly flies. But that also fails miserably.

2

The second number is the tightrope walker ballerina Arabella Muhlen-Puhlen, then again the clown.

3

Then the acrobat Lüfte Volodja Kablukov appears and again the clown. The director and the clown begin an argument about whether the acrobat's name is Volodja Kablukov or Serjoza Petrakov. Vertunov appears again. He now has a new idea and wants to imitate a goat on all fours. But the director sends him outside.

4th

Next up are the floor acrobats Kruskin and Kluskin. This number runs smoothly.

5

The next artist is Mathilda Huu-is-huu. However, the director has to sneeze before he can finish his announcement. Vertunov wishes him health. He now comes up with the suggestion that he can hop.

6th

The next artist is the Filipino juggler named Am gam Kaba laba Saba laba Saba gib tschip lib Tschiki kiki Kuki luki Tschuch schuch Sdugr pugr Of of Prrr . However, instead of the juggler with the long name, Verunov comes back on stage. Again the director doesn't let him do anything. Instead, the juggler throws a large balloon into the air, which when it bursts reveals the clown. This annoys the director with a blow with a bouquet of flowers.

7th

Next up is the power man Paramon Ogurcov. However, Vertunov appears again, but this time the director lets him go forward with the intention that the strong man Vertunov hits him on the head. This then disappears into the ground.

interpretation

Like so many plays by Daniil Charms, they play extremely with the unperformability and the limits of the theater. At the same time, Charms makes the story absurd and the impossible happen at the Sardam Circus.
