Ankara Citadel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ankara Citadel ( Turkish Ankara Kalesi or Akkale ) was built by the Hittites as a military garrison in today's capital of Turkey and is located on a 978 m high hill in the northern part of today's city center of Ankara .

Over the centuries the castle was used by different peoples and empires. When in the year 278 BC When the Galatians appeared in Anatolia , they made Ankara their capital. During this time, the citadel was expanded to two parts of the city (inner and outer city). Only a few of the former twenty towers in the outer city have survived today. The walls of the city center, on the other hand, are well preserved to this day.
