Zmotoryzowane Odwody Milicji Obywatelskiej

Zmotoryzowane Odwody Milicji Obywatelskiej ( ZOMO ) (German: Motorized Reserves of the Citizens' Militia ) was a barracked paramilitary special unit of the Milicja Obywatelska in the People's Republic of Poland . It was created in 1956 and was intended to put down unrest and was also equipped with BTR-60 armored personnel carriers .

The ZOMO were used, equipped with heavy weapons, u. a. on December 16, 1981 during martial law in Poland in the Wujek mine in the Upper Silesian coal district, which was occupied by miners . There they broke the resistance and shot nine miners. Interior Minister General Czesław Kiszczak ordered the deployment in 1981.

At the end of the 1980s, ZOMO had around 12,500 members. In 1989 ZOMO was dissolved.
