Reliability (telecommunications)

With regard to telecommunications, reliability means that messages are transmitted with a desired Quality of Service (QoS). Examples of QoS for messaging are:

  1. all sent data arrive in full
  2. the data arrives in the correct order
  3. there are no duplicates

In order to realize this, u. a. Sequence numbers used along with receipts (acknowledgments of receipt) and retransmissions .

An example of a reliable protocol is TCP ; an example of an unreliable protocol is UDP .
