The cylinder valve is a shut-off valve at the lowest point of the cylinder of a steam engine , for example in a steam locomotive , which is opened in order to separate out condensed water . The cock is operated (possibly via a linkage) by the engine driver or machinist before starting the machine in order to avoid so-called water hammer or also to preheat the cylinders.
